Paying kids for good grades???

Just read an article in the Economist about studies looking at paying kids for good grades. The good news is that it did not work very well overall. But... what are we thinking? How does giving children money for reading a book or getting good grades build a better society? How does that re-inforce the values we believe a sound society should have? What values I hear you ask! Well... that may be the problem...
